The Buvuma District Member of Parliament and chairperson of the Buganda Parliamentary Caucus, Robert Migadde, has credited the Buganda ku Museveni initiative with helping the National Resistance Movement (NRM) regain political ground in Buganda during the recently concluded elections.
Migadde said the initiative played a key role in reconnecting voters in the region with the ruling party, citing the election of 60 declared NRM Members of Parliament from Buganda.
“The Buganda ku Museveni group has been instrumental in reconnecting the people of Buganda with the NRM. Their dedication and outreach are clearly reflected in the election results,” Migadde said.
He said through the initiative, mobilisers traversed all districts in Buganda, engaging communities, listening to their concerns and relaying them to party leadership.
“Through the Buganda ku Museveni programme, we toured all districts, listened to the people and addressed their concerns. This effort has helped both the NRM and President Museveni regain popularity in the region,” he said.
Migadde noted that while the party had anticipated winning more than 75 parliamentary seats in Buganda, it secured at least 60, in addition to four MPs who ran as independents but are aligned with the NRM.
He also revealed that President Museveni’s support in Buganda rose significantly compared to the previous election cycle.
“In 2021, the President garnered about 28 per cent support in Buganda. In the recent elections, this rose to approximately 49 per cent, which is a notable achievement,” Migadde said, adding that the party was encouraged by the trend.
However, Migadde said the initiative faced resistance from within sections of the NRM, with some party members accusing the group of blocking access to the President.
“Some individuals tried to tarnish our image, portraying us as conmen seeking personal gain from the President,” he said.
Looking ahead, Migadde said the focus now is to ensure that commitments made to communities during the campaigns are fulfilled once President Museveni is sworn in this May.
“Our task now is to deliver on the promises we made to the people and to address community challenges across the districts,” he said.
Speaking specifically about Buvuma District, Migadde said residents are expecting the extension of electricity, the upgrading of Buvuma Hospital from a Health Centre IV to a fully fledged independent hospital, compensation for donors of coconut land, and the resolution of other long-standing issues.
“The people of Buvuma have high expectations, and we are committed to meeting them,” he said.
